Why a range?

Tokens are learned text pieces, not a fixed number of words. Code, punctuation, emoji, names, and non-English text can use more tokens than ordinary English prose.

01

Use ranges, not false precision

One token is not a fixed number of characters. Ordinary English, source code, emoji, and multilingual text split differently, so a planning range is more useful than a fake exact answer.

02

Measure the real text when possible

Conversions help before content exists. Once you have the prompt or document, paste it into the main calculator and verify strict limits with the model provider.

03

Remember request overhead

Chat roles, system messages, tool schemas, files, and formatting can add tokens beyond the document or prompt you counted.

Plain-English answers

Questions people ask before using the result

How many words are 1,000 AI tokens?

For ordinary English prose, roughly 650–850 words is a useful planning range. Code, lists, punctuation, and non-English text can fall outside it.

How many characters are in one token?

A common English planning range is about 3–5 characters per token, including spaces. Exact results depend on the model tokenizer and text.

How many pages are 100,000 tokens?

Using 400–600 words per single-spaced page and ordinary English token ratios, 100,000 tokens is roughly 108–213 pages. Layout and writing style can change that significantly.
